Comments Thread For: Juanma Hopes Vargas Win Will Lead Back To Title Shot

The current NABF champion at lightweight, Juan Manuel "Juanma" López, said he was confident that he would become the second Puerto Rican this year to return to capture a world title. Lopez saved his career by scoring a second round knockout over Daniel Ponce de Leon in their rematch earlier this year.

On July 12th, as the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Juanma will face undefeated Mexican fighter Francisco Vargas (19-0-1 and 13 knockouts), who is managed by Joel De La Hoya, brother of former champion and president of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya.

Hopefully Juanma can get back on top but he needs a big trainer in his corner

Bro i think Juanma is done. I don't think even a trainer change at this point in his career would help.

The win over Ponce De leon did not mean much! Ponce has not look good in his last 3 fights and that is why he has retired. Junma will not be able to content with a young lion, I just don't see it anymore, he is shot and the proof came in the 1st rd against Ponce when he went down. His chin is not able to hold off any punches that land flush!

          WAR JUANMAAA!!!!

I am ordering the PPV mostly for his fight because I don't like that coward Lara. I always get all PPVs but I strongly considered not getting this one just to not support that sissy coward style of boxing.

this guy is done. those wars with salido really took there toll on him.
then getting tagged by mikey garcia, really showed how bad his fight game is. ponce has been on the decline for a few years now and he even dropped juanma and almost had him out of there. his power is there still but his reflexes and balance are far gone. vargas disposes of juanma inside 8.

In spite of Ponce's declining state, I actually thought Juanma looked better than he has in his last three fights prior. Mainly because of how he let his hands go and closed the show. Sure, the opponent has a lot to do with how a fighter looks, but not everything. You can see certain things that he did against Ponce. Having said that, I don't think it means he can reign again. The Ponce fight was a glimpse of something solid, but I would be a bit surprised if he could beat Vargus. I don't think Juanma is unable to compete near the top, but I believe he is unable at the elite level and even if he could compete just below the elite level, he is risking neurological damage from the severe beatings he has taken. Going for one more run is like a gambler low on money trying for one more jackpot.....it may not be worth it. If he managed to win a title, it would all look shiny on the surface, but underneath it all is cumulative damage that could catch up to him, and looks as though it already has. Why take that kind of risk. That's the Boxers ego.

It brings me great joy watching Salido destroy Juanma. So I'm going for a trilogy, just to watch his wig get pushed back.
