Freddie Roach, trainer of WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov, says a knockout victory is very possible later tonight when his boxer defends his title for the first time against undefeated challenger Chris Algieri at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Roach doubts Algieri can accomplish the same result as Mauricio Herrera, who a few years ago was able to oubox Provodnikov for a decision victory. Provodnikov would later hire Roach as his trainer and began sparring with eight division champion Manny Pacquiao.

He's talking about a kickboxing match where Algieri got laid the fuck out by a right hook in one round. It's on youtube.

Very Interesting Breakdown and Prediction by Stephen "Breadman" Edwards, trainer of Julian Williams. This dude knows boxing, so we'll see.........

"The Provodnikov vs Algieir match up is so intriguing to me that as I type this I still don’t who to pick, so let me convince myself. When I first heard about this match up I had a brain blurb and I openly said on Twitter that I thought they picked the wrong guy for Ruslan. Algieri is a long junior welter, with a nice set of legs, who is fresh. I have seen Ruslan outboxed.

Provodnikov is one of my favorite current fighters. He was brought in at 147 to fight Tim Bradley in a show case fight. After some questionable calls he lost a close one. Then “they” tried to showcase him again and they matched him against Mike Alvarado in Alvarado’s hometown but Ruslan was not having it. He destroyed Alvarado. Now he’s fighting Algieri a good looking New Yorker in New York. I guess with being from Siberia, Ruslan does not have many choices. I hope they have been paying him well.

I think Ruslan has improved drastically since his ESPN days. He gets to the point of attack better and he seems more explosive. He also did more damage to Tim Bradley than anybody ever has. Regardless of the “style” Bradley decided to fight, the fact remains he concussed and repeatedly hurt a prime Bradley. More than Pacquiao and Marquez was able to do.

I don’t question Provodnikov’s punching power or is inhumane pain tolerance and will to win. I know when a guy comes to die and he’s that guy. But I do question just how good he is. Ruslan was outboxed for long stretches by Tim Bradley and Mauricio Herrera. There is no shame in that. Just ask Danny Garcia and Juan Manuel Marquez. Nevertheless it happened. Bradley was also able to hurt Ruslan to the body, which is the key to keep from getting steam rolled by a truck. Flatten the tires. Ruslan holds his guard in front of him like Alfredo Angulo, in and tight, and it leaves his sides open. As much of a puncher I believe he is, he wasn’t able to stop a shopworn Chop Chop Corley. From my sources Manny Pacquiao routinely outboxed him in sparring…

Chris Algieri has also improved in each fight that I have seen him. He’s still getting better in his 30’s. Algieri is an extremely cerebral fighter and he’s athletic. He’s 5’10 and that’s excellent height for the division. Algieri is not a big puncher but he’s a clean puncher. He’s also strong physically. There is a difference. He also punches correctly meaning he will hit you with full surface impact of his fist in the correct area. He may not be able to ko a lot of guys but he will be able to keep them off of him.

Algieri has an educated left hand and a very good left hook to the liver. Ruslan exposes his liver with his stance. Algieri has good legs and he uses them in his defense. He also contorts his body to keep from getting hit clean. He does ear muff a bit for a taller guy and I think that could be a problem for him. Freddie Roach trained combination punchers have a field day when fighters ear muff and let them run them off. It’s hard to counter from that position. Both of these guys have defensive habits that the other can take advantage.

If I knew about Algieri’s chin it would make my life easier. A friend of mine sent me a link showing Chris being knocked out by a punch in a kickboxing match. It was clean ko, no gimmicks, no kicks, just a punch. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a chin but it happened.

If Algieri can take Ruslan’s punches he wins this fight because he will score more points from moment to moment. Algieri is smart he hustles in combination after his opponents mount attacks. He’s conscious of the judges. He can match Ruslan’s workrate but the question is can he deal with the pain.

As I was watched the weigh in my pick became harder. Algieri was as calm and confident as can be. And Ruslan was Ruslan. But I noticed Gavin McMillan with Team Provodnikov. That is the S&C coach that helped Miguel Cotto looked so revived against Sergio Martinez. You guys know how I feel about S&C coaches but I’m telling you guys this McMillan is the truth. I know when a guy has added something physically. I don’t have the details of how much use Provodnikov had of McMillan but I did see him with Ruslan.

As I type this my pick will be Chris Algieri. I’m going with my initial gut feeling. I expect a high energy, intense fight. There is a lot on the line for both guys. Algieri should not have been more than a 3 to 1 underdog. He is going to fight. I think the second half of the fight will be rough for him. Ruslan does not stop. But he is going to have to earn his paycheck against this kid. The general public will be surprised at how well Algieri does. I say Algieri ekes out a controversial decision. Maybe one he doesn’t deserve but he will do enough in the live crowd's eye. The crowd will be on his side and he’s a good looking marketable kid……..

My two deciding factors were Ruslan does not jab his way in. He storms his way in. Algieri has a really good jab. My second factor was I judge true elite pressure fighters by if they can win rounds if they are not hurting their opponents. When Ruslan was not hurting Tim Bradley he wasn’t winning rounds. He rarely hurt Mauricio Herrera. I don’t know how good Algieri’s chin is but I expect his focus to be on point because of who is in there with. Pressure guys like Jeff Fenech and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. were the elite of the elite because they could actually sweep the rounds whether they were hurting you or not. I hope I’m wrong I’m a huge fan of Ruslan but this is what I came up with.

Yeah, so I guess if Provo comes in the ring with gloves that kickboxers wear..he should get the KO...

Balls to team Ruslan for taking such a dangerous fight. Nothing can be gained from it.
