Comments Thread For: Masternak Aims To Join Elite Ranks at Cruiserweight

Johannesburg - Cruiserweight contender Mateusz Masternak (32-1, 23 KOs) believes next weekend’s WBA interim championship bout against Youri Kalenga (19-1, 13 KOs) in Monte Carlo is the most important of his career.

The two will fight on the “KO at the Casino” Golden Gloves card on June 21 alongside the likes of Martin Murray and Hekkie Budler.

“If I win, I will be just one step away from the world championship,” said the 27-year-old from his base at coach’s Piotr Wilczewski’s gym, which is located in Dzierżoniów in south-western Poland.

Masternak is rated #12 by the WBC, #6 by the WBA

I hear Makabu has attempted to go AWOL from Golden Gloves. Sounds like someone was whispering advice in his ear.. you know that advice that usually turns out to be bull advice.

Cruiser would be an exciting division if the top guys fought each other, but that seems rare today.. 8-10 years ago the cruisers were giving us some thrilling fights with Cunningham, adamek, McCormick, o'neil bell, braithwaite, gullermo jones, haye

Those were good fights, no doubt, I guess I don't get to see them as much since they aren't televised in the states often..

            I stand corrected,,

But yes McCormick had some classic fights, especially with o'neil bell.. The heavyweight version sucks, but 04-07 McCormick was a top level guy at cruiser.

I think it was that he wanted to take an interim fight in the Congo and then everything went downhill from there

I read something about the Congo too. I hope his career gets back on track soon.
