Margarito is retired as well as campaigned in one division. Cotto on the other hand, even though he lost the first fight, had many more divisions to play with. Hence more options. But as a fighter, Margarito in his prime is better but as a boxer, Cotto by a mile. Cotto's career isn't finished yet and depending on what he does, he might have a better career than majority of the boxers out there.

Margarito was a one trick pony. Take two to give one. He was just a tough SOB who had a size advantage for his weight class.
Martinez said Margarito was his strongest opponent.
Paul Williams said Margarito was his strongest opponent.
Pacquiao said Margarito was his strongest opponent.
Yet Cotto fans see Cotto as a superhuman, that he can't be hurt. I'm sure as hell that it wasn't plaster that put Cotto down in their first fight.

Yeah, they all said he was the strongest guy they fought. And that could be because he is a one trick pony, and was naturally bigger than all the other WWs. Doesn't mean he can't be outboxed and outfoxed. I'm not taking anythin away from him beating Cotto in fight 1. He did what he had to do, survived and eventually broke Cottos will.
