Warriors Boxing Promotions offered an action packed evening of entertainment this past Friday to the gracious crowd of true boxing fans in attendance at the beautiful Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson born in Clarendon, Jamaica and now fighting out of Miami, FL faced the always-tough Richard “The Destroyer” Hall from Kingston, Jamaica but now boxing out of Winter Haven, FL in the main event of the “Road Warrior Returns!”
Johnson, the former world champion and 2004 Fighter of the Year – due to his annihilation of Roy Jones Jr. and victory over Antonio Tarver – versus the hardcore Hall was contested for the IBA light heavyweight title.
Johnson came out strong in the first with bad intentions on his punches but it was clear that Hall was up for the same fight plan.
The second round involved ferocious exchanges as heavy leather was traded, however Johnson had the stronger edge with power and overall accuracy. Johnson almost knocked Hall through the ropes with about 45 seconds to go in the round, which forced a standing 8 count by referee Tommy Kimmons. Hall was shaken and unsteady yet he miraculously managed to survive the round.
Hall was able to find his legs again in time for the opening of the third, and resumed to trading toe-to-toe with the overbearing Johnson. Although Hall was the more active fighter in the third, Johnson’s power was still enough to win him the round.
Hall came out strong in the fourth and landed gruesome combinations to Johnson’s midsection. Johnson seemed to take this round off, and was clearly outworked by the aggressor Hall.
The fifth round started out much like the previous round, as Hall stalked the “Road Warrior” and unloaded multiple combinations both to the head and midsection. Johnson connected with some strong uppercuts at the close of the round, but was again outworked by Hall.
The sixth through eighth rounds saw little action, as both fighters appeared to be somewhat spent from the early rounds.
By the ninth round, each fighter resumed to trading powershots in close quarters. Little defense was displayed, which was probably the result of the fatigue caused by the all out war.
Johnson came out hard in the tenth and rocked Hall with a vicious uppercut early in the round. The extremely game Hall shook the cobwebs almost immediately and traded with the crafty veteran.
Johnson dominated the eleventh round and nearly dropped Hall. The crowd exploded with anticipation, but amazingly, Hall refused to go down.
Both fighters were greeted with a well-deserved ovation to start the twelfth round. Johnson continued to dominate with his amazing power as the valiant Hall absorbed the power punches. As poetic justice for an amazing effort, Hall remained standing for the final bell.
Johnson won the contest but Hall won the hearts of the crowd for such a courageous and fearless effort.
The judges’ scorecard read: 118-109, 119-108 and 119-107.
Johnson’s record is boosted to 44 wins against 10 losses with 2 draws and 29 knockouts plus he captured the IBA title with his victory. Hall’s record fell to 27 wins against 6 losses and 25 knockouts.
