Fighters Get Caught in the 1st and Lose Their Legs All the Time...

As far as I'm concerned, everything happened too early to really be able to assess whether Martinez's knees were truly the culprit.

Think about Berto-Ortiz, Froch-Groves 1, and countless other fights where a fighter gets caught cold in the first and has trouble getting his legs back. It's not like this is some crazy thing to think.

Sergio definitely wasn't 100% but to dismiss this is grossly unfair to Cotto's performance. He shook Serg up good in the 1st and Sergio just couldn't get his legs back under him, that didn't happen cause of knee surgery.

Watching it back I don't think he ever recovered from the very first big punch that landed in round 1.

exactly! even sergio said that he was caught with a really good left hand in the first round and couldn't recover. remember that it was a left hook from chavez jr that wobbled and ultimately knocked down martinez.

Throughout the fight, I don't think Sergio looked that bad from a mobility standpoint. His punches didn't have the same snap though, but he was moving ok. I agree that the first round was too much for Sergio to recover from.

Sergio said it himself, he got caught early and never recovered!

you cannot discount the fact that martinez is half the athlete he used to be.

the guy was one of the most athletic fighters on the planet for several years. i remember seeing him live in connecticut, and feeling like was being moved around on wires from the ceiling. the guy used to freaking float around the ring. his legs were spectacular.

last night, his legs were never there. sure he was getting hit with big shots, but that doesn't discount the fact that he's not the athlete he used to be.

prime martinez doesn't get knocked out by miguel cotto. he doesn't.

watch him fight bunema, pavlik, cintron, williams in the first fight. there's a night and day difference in the speed in his feet and hands. he also used to punch harder.

all you had to do was watch sergio train. his legs were never goign to be the same. he's 39, bro.

That's what happens when you get older after spending several years of going down to your knees.... :*******:

He barely had time to use his legs before he went down, I think he just got caught cold like Dawson v Stevenson.

Not saying he's the same fighter as back then but he barely had a chance to get going before he was badly hurt.

I agree. Sergio isn't making excuses so no one else should. Having said that, I have to be realistic. Cotto looked great, but you couple that with the fact that Sergio is older, inactive and not 100%, you get what we had last night. A younger healthy Sergio would not have been dismantled last night. I'm not saying he would have won, but it wouldn't have gone down the way it did.
