Miguel Cotto knocked Sergio Martinez down three times in the first round and stopped him in the tenth to win the WBC middleweight title in New York on Saturday night. The 39-year-old Martinez suffered the third defeat, and probably the worst, of his 56-fight career as Cotto, 33, took the title away from him in a memorable Puerto Rican Day performance at the Madison Square Garden.

All three judges had scores of 90-77 in favour of Cotto before Martinez failed to come out for the tenth. The official result was a technical knockout after six seconds of the tenth round. Cotto enhanced his record to 39-4, including 32 wins inside the distance. Martinez dropped to 51-3-2, with 38 shortcut victories.

Miguel Cotto has options now, a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, a fight with Canelo Alvarez, a fight with Gennady Golovkin or a fight with Tim Bradley if he doesn't like the money in the previous 3 fights as I'm sure Cotto can get the money he wants in a Bradley fight.

As much as people saying that Cotto chose Sergio cause of the injuries, same could be said for Sergios team only choosing Cotto because they thought they have the advantage fighting the smaller fighter, instead of taking on GGG.

People really want to say it was Sergio's knees when Cotto landed a beautiful left hook over Sergio's right hand that got every thing started. I think blaming the knees is a cop out. The truth is Cotto is by far the most skilled fighter Martinez has ever faced and it's not even close.

The third knockdown was a feint jab/left hook that was just beautiful. Like Cotto said, Sergio keeps his right hand down and he took advantage of that.
