Madison Square Garden, New York City - Marvin Sonsona (19-1-1, 15KOs) avenged the only loss of his career with a ten round split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (23-4-1, 19KOs) to capture the vacant NABF featherweight championship. The scores were 96-92 for Sonsona, 96-92 for Vazquez and 96-92 for Sonsona. They previously met in 2010 at super bantamweight, and Vazquez won the fight by way of a fourth round knockout.
Vazquez was dropped in the first round from a hard shot to the body, but recovered well. By the fourth round the tide was changing and Vazquez Jr. was starting to slowly take over. In the sixth, Sonsona lost a point for landing an illegal blow. The next few rounds were ugly, filled with holding, wild punches and several stumbles where both fighters wrestled to the mat. But it was Sonsona who put together the better punches in spots.
