It was all a big fuss over a particular wrapping technique, but people like to act like he was busted with plaster or some ****. Probably because they didn't even start watching boxing until De La Hoya/Mayweather so they have no perspective on what actually transpired.
I may be wrong on the legality of it in Tito's prior fights but - His wraps had been signed off on by State-appointed athletic directors for his entire career up until the Hopkins bout, so I think it's highly unlikely that he was doing something incredibly dubious or illegal.
It was just the way his dad wrapped his hands.
It's a trick of the old timer prizefighters. Some of them used bicycletape directly on the knocklearea. During the fight it 'curled' and became hardened so the fist was like a club. I find it hard to believe this method would be legal anywhere.

It wasn't tape directly on the first. It was tape directly on the wrist.

Still trying to find that damn article, but here's a nice thread that contains the comments of various boxing people from Teddy Atlas to Marc Ratner (director of NSAC at the time) on the subject of Tito's wraps.

But I think there's a huge distinction between the two. Tape on a fist could be seen as something to give a fighter added power (a lot of trainers disagree), but tape on the wrist, as far as I know, is a stability/protection issue so you don't **** your wrist up.
There's a clear difference in intent there.

joppy's defense was ass in that fight. his dumb ass thought he'd be able to handle a former welterweights power, and after he got damn near decapitated, the butt hurt set in.
