Comments Thread For: Pedraza Cleared For Non-Title Fight On Cotto-Martinez Bill

A massive weekend in New York City dedicated in and out of the ring to Puerto Rico will now also include one of the island’s fastest rising young stars. Hours before Argentina’s Sergio Martinez defends his World middleweight championship versus Miguel Cotto this weekend, unbeaten super featherweight Jose Pedraza will ply his trade in front of a packed house at Madison Square Garden.

Pedraza’s status on the card was tentatively set for a six-round bout versus Arturo Uruzquieta, which will air live on WAPA-TV.

"Miguel Cotto is one of the best fighters to come out of Puerto Rico and I want to become a household name in my country just like he did," said Pedraza (16-0, 10KO), who shares Cotto's hometown of Caguas, Puerto Rico. "I know with hard work, and the guidance of my promoters, Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella and Javier Bustillo, I can go far in boxing. My ambition is to be the next great champion from Puerto Rico." Charisma second to none? Shaw seems to ignore Verdejo who is already a bigger household name in PR due to his charisma.

Lets set this right. Verdejo is a big lightweight, Pedraza is IBF featherweight champion. Verdejo is still growing, he is 10 lbs heavier now, so mentioning Pedraza as a non opponent is just more disrespect. Name dropping, that's all. I hope good things happen for Pedraza, he earned it.

Nobody wants to talk to me? Let me say that the guy Pedraza is about to fight is probably better than Verdejo. He is taller, and is a traveler too. This is no picnic for Pedraza. 6 rounds? Pedraza will have to be a quick study just to get by this guys jab. Get warmed up real good and go for broke early to pile up points, don't get careless. This guy is good.

They are campaigning in the same weight class right now. Pedraza is no champion. He have the IBO belt. Nothing more. Are you sure you are even following them?
