Comments Thread For: David Haye Comes Out in Defense of Groves' Chin

Former two-division world champion David Haye has rejected any notion that super middleweight contender George Groves has a weak chin. Last Saturday night, before 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, Groves was knocked senseless in the eight round from a huge right hand from Carl Froch. The fight was waved off a moment later.

Groves was a former stablemate of Haye and the two fighters often trained together under the direction of trainer Adam Booth.

No need to "defend" Groves' chin. No one sane thinks it's weak. It's obviously not granite, but it held up well in previous fights (though he was rocked a couple of times), and getting KO'd by Froch in 8 is hardly proof of a weak chin.

Groves has no chin. He was rocked by paul smith, james degale and kenny anderson. Froch hurt him in the last fight. Im a groves fan but he has no chin. The worse thing is he doesnt have faith in his durability. Everytime froch hit him he either held on or ran.

He doesn't have a glass jaw, but it's not brilliant either. That right hand that Froch knocked him out with would've KO'd a rhinoceros so that's nothing to be ashamed of.

based on what? when has froch ever laid someone out with one shot before? he had bute and taylor completely finished and still struggled to knock them of their feet with clusters of full bodied punches.

froch is a good puncher, but he isnt a one punch knockout artist. he is a heavy handed guy who breaks you down as the fight goes on, every punch has an effect and slows the opponent down but no single punch is truly devastating (usually). what really makes him dangerous is that he maintains his power for 12 rounds so he usually gets to his opponents once they started to fade.

but again he really isnt a one punch knockout artist, so for groves to get shut down like that with one punch is concerning. i wouldnt say he has a glass jaw but its below average for sure and will likely pose problems at world level. bute and taylor get accused for having glass jaws but they both got better punch resistance than groves imo, froch landed those same shots on them and while he did get them out of there it took a lot more to achieve significantly less in terms of damage.

It was the perfect punch though. Carl even said he's never landed a better one.

The KO shows more of how good Froch is, nothing to be ashamed of for Groves, he can beat some top guys at 168

Groves has a chin, it's certainly not glass as he wouldn't have lasted so long with Froch. His problem comes in the fact a) his defence isn't great b) neither is his stamina.

Those two alone can negate a great chin. Do you think Froch would be such a tank if it were not for his conditioning?

I was told a few years ago that Groves doesn't hold a punch well, especially to the body. That is why I was certain on Froch winning both fights.
