Comments Thread For: Geale Wants Soliman If Golovkin Fight Falls Apart

If the WBA denies Daniel Geale the fight he really wants – a shot at middleweight monster Gennady Golovkin – the former middleweight title-holder suddenly has an attractive alternative.

While Geale and his promoter, Gary Shaw, held out hope Sunday that they’ll be able to finalize a July 26 fight against Golovkin at Madison Square Garden, Shaw also acknowledged that a Geale-Sam Soliman showdown would do big business in Australia. Soliman soundly defeated Germany’s Felix Sturm in their 12-round rematch Saturday in Krefeld, Germany.

I saw a couple of other posters call this as soon as Soliman beat Sturm. A title shot on home soil against a lesser opponent is probably going to make more sense to Geale than travelling to the US to get knocked out. He already chose to fight Mundine over GGG so if past form is anything to go by we know what to expect.

I expect Geale to duck GGG again, hopefully I'm wrong.

When Geale chose Mundine over Golovkin, Golovkin was a nobody and didn't really bring much money to the table. I expect HBO to pay up this time so it won't be a problem.

If Geale beats Soliman, he could fight Golovkin in a unification bout. Then the winner of that fight could fight the winner of Martinez-Cotto for the Undisputed MW Championship.

Geale and Soliman should fight instead in Australia. It would be a big fight since they're both Aussies. Golovkin needs bigger names at this point before his stock falls.

So, the WBA still hasn't said what they're doing?
