Ill put it this way, he left hbo when he could have gotten more money facing Kovalev than going to showtime for facing fonfara. He wanted to face Hopkins? And what will you say, if he'll face Kovalev after he fought with Hopkins? You'll continue saying "duck, duck, duck..." or you 'll realize that from the two rival belt holders, Kovalev was the riskier with lower regards and Fonfara was just a set up match for B-Hop-Stevenson show in Montreal and this kind of manouver was the right choice from Stevenson.
Stevenson is a late bloomer, he's 36 years old, he wants to earn as much money as possible before the end of his carreer (probably 4-5 years). Now in the lhw division the are 4-5 top guys. Let's take a look.

Sequentially: Risk --> Kovalev>Hopkins>Pascal
Regard: Hopkins>Pascal>Kovalev. These are not facts but if you say that a B-Hop vs Adonis or a Pascal VS Adonis (in Montreal) show sell worse than a Kovalev VS Stevenson, I stongly disagree.
So Kovalevis the most risky fight for him but the least amount of money --> it would be totally sound if Stevenson fight with these guys in this order: B-Hop-->Pascal-->Kovalev. That sounds totally sensible for me. Both guys rose just last year, be a little more patient...
If Stevenson never face Kovalev? Okay, if that will be the case by the end of Adonis carreer, you'll right, but now you're just a pack of impatient haters.
