  • The World’s 50 Most Marketable 2014! Saul Alvarez No.22

Good to see a boxer on this list.

    Saul Alvarez - Mexican, 23, Boxing (32)

    22

Mexico’s boy wonder, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, had a big 2013. In fact, in boxing terms, the 23-year-old from Guadalajara climbed – or, more accurately, was given a shot at climbing – Everest. His once in a lifetime fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr materialised last year and was by all accounts the richest fight in boxing history; generating nearly US$200 million in revenue and attracting 2.2 million pay-per-view subscriptions in the US. Canelo’s in-ring stock undoubtedly dipped after Mayweather comprehensively beat him at the MGM Grand in September, and he quietly stepped away from the spotlight until the new year.

However, as SportsPro pointed out 12 months ago, losing is not a dirty word in Central American boxing and the Golden Boy-promoted fighter remains a megastar in his home country. Indeed, win or lose, Canelo’s Mayweather clash thrust him into rarefied territory and exploded his status globally. A host of sponsors are likely to jump on the Canelo bandwagon – joining long-term sponsor Under Armour – after he returned to winning ways against Alfredo Angulo in March, especially with fights in July and November pencilled in for 2014.

Although his status as the only boxer on this year’s list may ruffle boxing purists’ feathers, it is important to emphasise this is not a pound-for-pound list; it is based on value for money and marketing potential. Canelo is the pin-up for a sport-mad country of 120 million people and, with the prospect of a further ten years at – or near – the top of the game, no boxer presents a more commercially attractive picture than Mexico’s fiery redhead.
