Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto Discusses What Roach Brings To The Table

Question: Training with Freddie Roach must be a different experience for you. Can you describe why he's one of the best trainers in boxing?

Miguel Cotto: Freddie is a great person and a great trainer, who understands our sport. He was a fighter and has trained some of the best boxers in the world over the last 10 to 15 years. He is a true professional that knows how to get the best out of every fighter that he trains. He makes everyone better and his preparation for each fight is second to none.

Cotto felt Martinez's passion during Face-off. Serg got into his head, he made english-speaking Cotto revert to native in no time.

The proof is in the pudding. I mean, 6 or so trainer of the year awards mean something. Cotto is in good hands and he knows it. Not many people know that Roach is also a confidence builder and that's a big part of what he does to get a fighter ready to fight above himself. He knows how to connect to a fighter mentally and that's why he's so successful.

When Cotto left his uncle, I always thought he should have hooked up with Freddie Roach.
It took a while, but he finally got to him.
Hope he has a good game plan for Cotto though, because Martinez is a very different animal than Rodriguez was.

dummy... he reverted to spanish so sergio could understand what he was saying.

To all my boxers out there, this question is for you:

Is it more important to have a really good trainer, or a really good gym (competitive sparring) like Kronk, Wild Card, Gleason's, etc.?

I would say gym for experience, etc. but there is definitely something to be said for a gameplan and strategy/technique.

He's not gonna come out like the whirlwind he was against Rodriguez. People are gonna be surprised when Miguel Cotto is outboxing Sergio Martinez for extended periods.
