Comments Thread For: Fres Oquendo-Ruslan Chagaev in Talks For June 7th

Heavyweight contender Fres "Fast Fres" Oquendo (37-7, 24 KO's), who reappeared on Saturday in Kansas City and stopped Galen Brown (41-27-1, 24 KO's) in two rounds, is working his way to another title shot, by moving up the ladder in the rankings of the World Boxing Association (WBA).

According to Oquendo, there are ongoing talks to face former champion Ruslan Chagaev (32-2-1, 20 KOs) of Uzbekistan on June 7th for the vacant WBA "regular" heavyweight crown. In 2011 Chagaev dropped a unanimous decision against Alexander Povetkin and he's won five bouts since then.

Two insignificants going at it to produce a winner who will also be insignificant. Not newsworthy at all.

Good fight in itself, but having this added to it...

          vacant WBA "regular" heavyweight crown
... is fucking tragic. :yuck: It was bad enough when Chagaev and Valuev both had WBA belts and the rematch never happened, then Wladimir and Povetkin had their stinker of a fight, but Fres Oquendo and a past-best Chagaev? Jeez already.

Chagaev is no longer a top ten HW, and Oquendo is no longer a top 50 HW.

If this is for the "world" title then the WBA are making a mockery of the sport of boxing.

This should be a fight for entertainment's sake, not one with a title on the line. Still, more $$ for the WBA.

It's **** like this that makes me laugh when people dismiss IBO titles and say there are only four legit bodies. Just because the WBA is more established doesn't make it legit. Look what they're doing!
