Question - Why Fight Martinez now and not 4 years ago?

Miguel Cotto - Everything happens at the time it needs to happen. I do not push destiny. Boxers take different paths in their career and those roads don’t always come together. If someone would have told me that I would be fighting for a world championship at 160 pounds four years ago I would have not thought possible. But here I am looking to make history – becoming the first Puerto Rican to win world titles in four different weight divisions.

He should have just came clean and said that after I seen him nearly decapitate Paul Williams I like the rest of the world was like holy **** I'm not going near that guy.....but now that he's shown a little wear and tear I think this is as good a chance as any too capture the real middleweight title.

Jajajaja, force destiny you cannot do, huh? That is your answer. Not because Martinez was putting Williams to sleep, not because a southpaw Manny destroyed you. Not because a heavy Margarito made you take a knee (even though I do believe he had plaster of Paris in his wraps). Not because a 154 lb trout OUTBOXED you (southpaw also). Not because Martinez looked like extra hot dogchit in his last fight and was all type of broken up after the fight. Not because Martinez is closer to 40 than you are to 35.
Big fan of both fighters, i want a fight of the year caliber batalla. Let the best man win. Cause either was they both get destroyed in next fight. Cotto vs Conelo. Maravilla vs GGG.

Yeah, Cotto, you're a poosey who fights for a living to support your family, risking your life in the process. You've fought margarito, mayweather, pac, trout, clottey, Mosley, judah. But just admit that you're scared of Martinez and you always have been! Why don't you take pride in yourself like a real man and talk $h!t To guys online who wouldn't have the balls to do what you do for a living!

why do you think Margarito was able to blow through guys like Cintron and have devastating kos like vs Lujan (that ear tho) and make guys like Cotto take a knee yet guys like Paul Williams were able to beat him and Clottey was beating him until he hurt his hand but still didn't get ko'd? With plasters you would think all those guys wouldn't be able to withstand the punches

In no way am I defending the plaster but go back and watch that fight..Plaster or no plaster Cotto fought Margarito's fight the whole night. Plaster or not the shots he got hit with still were margaritos best shots. I honestly feel like Margarito wanted to be the first man to stop Mosley so they cheated because had he had plaster of paris in his hands in his fight with Cotto he would've likely left him brain dead. Go watch the shots Cotto got hit with again and tell me i'm wrong. It's also no coincidence that Pacquaio was still feeling the effects of fighting Margarito a year later and we all know there was no plaster in that fight, Roach made a point of ensuring it.

Honestly, who really believes all that? The post below is much closer to the truth.

4 years ago Cotto just moved to 154, yet he was suppose to fight the middleweight champ?

To me it is much simpler than that, he had better options near or below his own weight class. You don't go chasing after bigger men unless that is a much bigger fight or you can not get the best guys from your own classes to fight, neither of which apply to Cotto.
