Eddie Chambers explains why Wladimir Klitschko is an all-time great

Eddie Chambers explains why Wladimir Klitschko is an all-time great

“You cannot argue with his success. He has been at the top of the division for 10 years and his credentials speak for themselves as one of the best heavyweights of all time.”

“Wladimir is clever both inside and outside the ring,” continued Chambers.

“And he knows how to generate some interest in fights against the likes of Alex Leapai even when Leapai had already lost to a guy like Kevin Johnson, who is a talented fighter, but has never been able to get over that hump and win a title. “Wladimir would look at Leapai and think that’s a good guy to fight because he’s a big puncher and people might think he had a chance to knock him out.”

David Haye incessantly taunted Wladimir during the build up to their 2011 encounter in Hamburg by wearing t-shirts that graphically portrayed his severed head. As a challenger the Londoner posed a significant threat on paper to the reign of Klitschko with his concussive power and speed but on fight night Haye found out that saying you can beat the 6ft 6” champion is one thing, carrying it out is something else entirely.

“Klitschko does the grab and hold thing really well against smaller guys and he will also extend his jabbing arm to keep you at bay,” Chambers explained. “He also has that elite strength on top of his size and power which makes getting inside on him very, very difficult. He’s also very athletic, much more so than the big heavyweights he has been fighting so to beat him you almost need that perfect storm.”

From the fast and elusive guys to the powerful modern day super heavyweights, Wladimir has turned away all comers and looks as though he can continue to dominate the division for as long as he sees fit despite the recent rise to prominence of the ‘new breed’ of fighters such as Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder.

“Like Mike (Tyson) used to say ‘Everyone has a plan until they get hit,’” said Chambers. “But that doesn’t mean these guys facing him (Klitschko) shouldn’t have a plan!”

“When I watch my fight with Wladimir there were things I did in the fight that worked early on but then I got caught with a right hand and it made me feel as though I needed to land something on him instead of playing to my strengths.

“That is the difference between Wladimir and the rest of the division. He can stick meticulously to a game plan and he doesn’t let up which for me marks him out as a great champion.”

Wladimir Klitschko is the main man. Even if he retires: I'm still modeling myself to be a model of what Klitschko is. Of what a real, real fighter is. And that's him.

It's not Wlad's fault the division sucks. He does his job and does it excellent, so credit to him and yes he is an ATG.

I remember people on here were so high on Chambers. Some even went as far as saying he will outbox Wlad. After getting knocked out, you rarely hear them say anything. People are so quick to throw someone under the bus after a loss.
