Mike Tyson: Corporate took over boxing

Tyson said its not like how it used to be at his fights. No pimps, gangsters, hookers, and all that related to the underground.. corporate has taken over.

Would it take a different personalty/fighter than Mayweather, or is that just the way things are now?

That's just the way things are now.

Back in the day, you could get robbed or shot in Times Square, NYC. But today? Times Square is now DisneyLand these days. Manhattan is waaaay different. That's how I see it in terms of what Tyson was saying. Times changed a lot.

There's still 2 men in the ring battling it out whether corporate is there or not.
Some of the match up may be lopsided , but that has more to do with promoters.
Unless of course you are referring to the promoters as corporate.
HBO and Showtime I would consider corporate and do have a share in deciding who fights who.
I also don't think either of these companies want to air coke heads , crack dealers, and hookers to draw a larger demographic.

I would go see a fight in Madison Square Garden any night of the week, which is in Manhattan.
I have been thinking of buying tickets to go see Ruslan Provodnikov fight in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The only thing stopping me from doing this is that I don't want to be in Brooklyn at night on a Saturday. I work in NYC and I wind up in all 5 boroughs, the only one that makes me uncomfortable is Brooklyn.
It has some really bad neighborhoods.

Tyson is from Brooklyn he just hasn't been back in a while or he wouldn't have said this.

Brooklyn has changed A LOT. It is not the same Brooklyn at all compared to the childhood days of Tyson. Some parts of still rough and crazy though. Where the Barclay's is at is a very busy area. And security/police is around there too. The train stop is literally right in front of the Barclays.

No need to feel uncomfortable man. The Barclay's isn't in Brownsville.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. I don't think anyone really wants to go back to when Frankie Carbo was running Boxing.

But I do wish somethings would be like the past- ie, fighters being more active... Sugar Ray and LaMotta got back in the ring 3 WEEKS after one of their brutal wars. It takes fighters years nowadays sometimes to get a rematch going. And you're lucky if you get to see your favorite fighter 2X a year. Guys used to fight every couple of months, sometimes weeks.

Plus PPV has only benefitted the people at the very top of the sport... not the sport itself. Boxing stopped being one of the most popular sports in the US when Arum and King realized putting fights on PPV and getting a few hundred thousand or maybe even a million people buying was more profitable for them than a fight being available to hundreds of millions on CBS or NBC.

Times have changed, has nothing to do with boxing. Back in the day pimps were ok to be seen with, they were admired (well the famous ones) by a lot of street guys, it was ok to be seen with criminals and gangsters.

Frank Lucas used to check out Ali fights in the front row with his mink coat on, sitting next to politcians and ****.
Guys like Don King don't exist anymore. Now you have all these suit wearing ******s who are all about business and don't ever say anything wrong. Back in the day you could have whooped your promoters ass like Tyson did with Don King and nobody would care. If Floyd punched Shaefer in the face his life would be over.

People say Broner is being racist right now. Back in the day that was normal. Times just changed, that's all. Everything has to be perfect these days, everybody has to walk be clean cut, they all have to walk a straight line.
