      More like a Mexican Fake . Depends what you mean by great, like an All-Time great or one of the better Mexican fighters of his era?

      Here's how I see it-> He should be considered both! Afterall he's of Mexican blood born in the U.S.

      Yes I consider him a Mexican great but on the lower rung. However I don't see him as an All-Time great when you throw in all boxers not just Mexicans. Definitely one of the best in his era.

        de la hoya is a once mexican now puerto rican american....he is married to a puerto rican has a puerto rican child and lives most of the year in puerto rico and just opened a gym in puerto rico...

          he has 5 gyms in LA yeah his wife is puerto rican his hid is puerto rican mexican american not just PR.

            IMO - he's a great American boxer. I've got to admit, I found the confusion about his nationality a little funny. I can't imagine anyone calling Ali an African great or Somalia great or whatever.

            Now that I think of it, what kind of great was Lennox Lewis? Jamaican, Canadian, or British?
