Comments Thread For: De La Hoya on His Demons, Regaining Golden Boy Control

LAS VEGAS --- Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya said he understands how Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer could find him unreliable because of his bouts with drug and alchohol addiction.

"Absolutely, that's very understandable," De La Hoya said. "Listen, everybody has their troubles. Everybody in this world has trouble and issues that they have to deal with. Now, I'm dealing with them. "Everybody in this world has troubles. I’m not running away from them anymore. See, the easy part for me was running away. I'm not running away anymore. I’m getting the bull by the horns. What matters the most to me right now is obviously my family, but this company, boxing. That's what matters to me the most behind my family. The fans, they want to see great fights. This is important to me. I had a little derailment, a big one. I did. I don't want to stay down. I'm tired of staying down. I'm a fighter and I'm going to fight."

I've had some **** to say about De La Hoya in the past but I got to give it up to him. It takes a big man with humility and a ton of heart to fight through addiction while being put under a microscope. It's not easy at all. All the best to you champ.

Oscar has been through hell and back. I hope he has really turned the corner. For he has some big plans for this sport we all love.

Seems like Oscar mellowed down a bit. But I'll only believe it when the big fights are made between Top Rank and Golden Boy.

He might over compensate, guilt trip, try too hard to be a nice guy in a den of snakes. He's showing his hand, I don't see his reasoning. Why admit human weakness.

I really hope he has won the fight against drug- and alcoholaddiction. If he has, it's great news for boxing. His original visions for Golden Boy Promotions was great, but the Company has not lived up to expectations unfortunately. Maybe Oscar can set a new course and hire a staff to steer in the right direction for the benefit of fans and boxers.

                War Oscar!

it's funny how people think schaefer will be showered by cash and takes control of tmt. mayweather already has a promoter and an adviser. schaefer don't fit in the picture.

dela hoya built schaefer into what he is today from once being some paper pusher cramped up in a small office to CEO.

if he leaves GB, schaefer would be lucky if tmt just lowballed him. if he gives up his contract, schaefer will be left out to dry. if his smart, he'd kiss dela hoya's ass and do what's told
