Not only is it not to sell the fight, but Mayweather shouldn't be given that much credit. Him and Ellerbe have IQ of elementary drop outs. Which Mayweather in fact is.

Its all about publicity. The old saying goes there is no such thing as bad press. The story on the gloves controversy is being talked about nationwide, is on the front page of Yahoo and many other sports news outlets. This fight doesn't really have that much buzz around it and I have talked to a lot of sports fans that didn't even know Mayweather was fighting this weekend. Now the fight has some (manufactored) controversy to get people talking and put it on people's radar.
Haymon has a history of promoting music concerts and he knows nothing puts butts in the seats like some controversial press. See Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, etc....
