Because back handing and slapping are not effective punches. They're not doing any damage. All they're doing is annoying the other fighter. Boxing is a serious sport, this is not pillowfighting.

Effective punches are punches that start from your legs where the power travels through your body and is released in full out your knuckles and into to your target area with the entire weight of your body. Those are the punches that do damage.

We don't score punches that don't do damage.

Boxing is about punching. It's a sport, not a street fight. Slapping, hammer-fisting isn't punching. There you have it.

Or guys lacing everytime they take a swipe with an open gand? Also less padding there and higher chance of injury.

The traditional backhand (like a pimp hand) just doesnt belong. Think of the clinch initiation, hook, backhand smash into the neck grab. It doesnt belong in the sport its unsightly.

As a Jeet Kune Do/Kali/escrima practitioner and now as a Tai Chi Chuan instructor I am both a fan of "western boxing" and the Eastern Martial Arts.

They are both different 'languages' if you will and specialized arts. 'Western Boxing' as we know it were largely from the British Boxing but also influenced by Filipino blade boxing in the turn of the 19th Century when the Americans took Philippines as part of the American Commonwealth while encountering the Filipino native 'escrimadors'.

Thus Filipino Blade boxing has many components eerily similar to 'western boxing' not just by coincidence but by the way how our body moves and in conjunction with the blades.

Moves that incorporates back hands, bolo punches (different from Filipino version), hammer fists, vertical fist, clawing, ripping and etc. are all part of the arsenal of the Filipino Martial Arts that were the cousins or transcended martial arts from the Chinese/Indonesian/Malaysian Kuntao,Silat and Kung Fu during the Majapahit Empire of the Pre-Spanish era (Philippines was colonized by Spain by around 1521).

These moves requires specific bio-mechanics similar to 'western boxing' but more. But the 'western boxing's punches also are very specialized movements inorder to facilitate the ballistics of pugilism. It is a 'point' or 'stabbing' feature of the Filipino Martial Arts that they have similarities with ***8211;*meaning, the usage of the tips of any hand weapons that is akin to the movements of the 'western boxing's body mechanics inorder to facilitate it.

To those people who are not familiar with the Filipino Martial Arts or Chinese Kung Fu, Backhands CAN BE VERY EFFECTIVE and CAN BE BRUTAL likewise. Obviously those are different 'languages' if you will and not included in the rules of 'western boxing'.

But from a pugilistic and martial arts' point of view, they can be integrated.

Would I agree with it? NO.

I like the 'western boxing' as is. It is a great sport and will continue to mature into this codified form of combat punching. Leave it as be.

But some fighters get away with borderline back hands when they flick the jab, Hearns did it.

because it would be ***ing ******ed, it's the ultimate gentleman sport, not a ****** sport where people flail there hands every which way like dipshts(although sadly there are someone people e.g malignaggi, that make us look bad)
