Dear Yahoo!:
What was the fastest knockout ever recorded in boxing?
Keith
Sacramento, California
Dear Keith:
With a quick one-two punch, we found the answer to your question. In fact, it took just a bit longer than the punch that knocked out Ralph Walton in 1946.
We started by typing three words into the Yahoo! search box: boxing, knockout, and fastest. Our search resulted in hundreds of web pages, including several that answered the question.
One of the web pages listed was from Slam Sports, the sports section of the huge Canadian web site Canoe. The page listed notable sports figures who died in 2000. Included in the list was the boxer who made history on September 24, 1946.
Aurele "Al" Couture, a welterweight, set the record for the fastest knockout in boxing history by flooring Ralph Walton just 10.5 seconds into the fight.
We looked around for more information on Couture, but couldn't find much. We did learn that he fought 296 professional fights, and at one time was ranked sixth in the world in his division, ahead of Jake LaMotta.
Maybe that was the fastest knockout in a championship heavyweight fight, but about a year or so ago, there was an untelivised fight where once the bell rang, one guy put his hand out to bump gloves and the other guy knocked him into next week.
