Baldomir takes the high road, signs with Golden Boy

    From *********:

Word is Carlos Baldomir will likely defend his WBC welterweight title on the proposed Oscar De La Hoya-Ricardo Mayorga undercard on Saturday, May 6th. One possible opponent could be welterweight Antonio Diaz. Baldomir upset Zab Judah last month for the WBC title in New York City. Diaz has won his last three fights.

Good for Carlos, sounds like he's taking the 2-fight deal with Golden Boy. Gatti and Hatton must be fuming now that it looks like they won't get their shots to take his title. Both of these fights would have been instant millions for Carlos, but especially against Hatton there was a good chance he'd lose.

Gatti and Hatton were both looking to grab cheap glory by beating up on a lightly-regarded opponent. But it looks like Baldomir is genuinely interested in building a career for himself.

This isn't good news because the two-fight deal would include the Oscar finale for the belt.

I need De La Hoya/Mayweather. Nothing less.

I can't see the Oscar fight happening. As far as I know he was just one of the proposed opponents. But then again I think DLH/PBF is a no-hoper as well .

From what I read on it, Baldy was supposed to take a fight for around $500,000 and if he was to win then get a crack at Oscar for the millions.

De La Hoya/Mayweather has to happen. I think the talk is already starting to build.

This is the way Rafael explains it:

Another offer being considered is a two-fight deal from Golden Boy Promotions that would start with Baldomir earning $500,000 on the May 6 HBO PPV undercard of Oscar De La Hoya's fight with junior middleweight titlist Ricardo Mayorga. Opponents mentioned early in the discussions were Antonio Diaz, Ishe Smith, Craig Weber and Larry Mosley, but all were ruled out for one reason or another -- either they were unavailable or unacceptable by one of the sides.

The second fight of the Golden Boy proposal would call for Baldomir to fight in the fall with one scenario being a $2 million minimum to fight De La Hoya if he and Baldomir each win May 6. However, if De La Hoya opts not to fight Baldomir, Golden Boy Promotions would still guarantee $1.5 million for Baldomir to face another name opponent, possibly Shane Mosley if he defeats Fernando Vargas next week.

To be honest, Oscar has been flaky as hell in recent years. He could change his mind ten times about the issue before he decides whether or not to take this fight. Plus he still has to get past Mayorga.

Baldomir deserves the money, but I don't think he has the skills to look too far into the future....

Mosley would carve him up. He's too slow to win more than 2-3 rounds
