Only reason Heavyweight division is down in popularity is because...
Majority of people are not 205 LBS 6 foot, they cannot relate much with heavyweights, whereas most people are around 140 LBS which is similar to Floyd/Manny so everyone loves that division.
Heavyweights demand respect though. To be punched by a guy who's body weight is above the 100kg mark is no joke. I guess the division is not near enough as talented as people with relatively massive muscle mass are now unable to compete in the sport as steroids are not easy to get out of the system with today's testing. That there plays a huge role is why they don't have a stacked division. Compare the like of Bruno and Tyson, Foreman, Morrison the guys nowadays just don't look like them dudes from the 80's and 90's
Here I (and most other boxing fans) have thought that the decline in popularity of Heavyweight boxing over the last decade or so had more to do with the facts that the division itself is in a drought as far as talent goes, and the current champion is a boring pisspot who hugs his way through bouts that nobody sees because he's fighting in Germany all the time.
But thank **** for you showing me the light, man.
Everybody knows that Tyson was so popular because everybody in the 1980s was 5'10 and built like a brick ****house.

The Champion being boring means nothing, have you seen Floyd Mayweather fight?? And his P4P.
That's ridiculous, the reason heavyweight has always been the division that sells is because most people can't relate to all the smaller guys below it.

Most men are probably closer to 205 and 6' as opposed to 140 and 5'7". (At least here in the states.)

so we should completely discount the fact that many of the fat HW today don't train hard, or have the talent of the great 90's HW?

HW boxing was the most popular sport in america for several generations. people were much, much smaller then. so were the HW. many fought below 200 lbs. they were still bigger than the average man on the street by a stretch. i'm not sure what you're getting at.
