Takashi Uchiyama, the super featherweight champ is probably the biggest star due to a string of KOs on his way up. He has a Nike sponsorship contract similar to those pacquiao and Anderson silva had, 'Uchiyama knows'. Boxing is a huge mainstream sport in Japan with most of the top fighters regularly on TV variety shows.

Boxing in Japan is pretty popular. Most TV rating websites for the country have it listed as a top 5 sport. I think all of the big networks have a fight every month, but it's usually those big fights like the three Kamedas, Ioki, and Yaegashi who clock in the big numbers. During the 2012 Olympics boxing was the second most watched sport over all. Fighting Harada is in the top 5 most watched Japanese programmes of all time. Tyson vs Douglas is in the top 10, as is one of the Kameda fights.

Compared to other sports it doesn't pull the regular viewing figures that say Sumo, baseball and figure skating pull, but those major events tend to lift the over all average of viewers so numerically speaking it's still in the top sports. Sumo for example will reguarly appear in the top 10 each week, but more people will tune in for boxing than they would sumo.
