    Darchinyan: Arce let's fight!

    Sunday, February 19 2006

By Ray Wheatley -- World of Boxing

Vic Darchinyan (24-0) will defend his IBF flyweight title against Diosado Gabi (26-2-1) of the Philippines at the Chumash Resort Casino, Santa Ynez, California on March 3rd. Darchinyan is confident of defeating the challenger, saying "I will beat him. I am much stronger and I believe strongly in my ability." Darchinyan's trainer and former three-time world champion Jeff Fenech said. "People will see that I have the best flyweight in the world and the hardest punching flyweight."

Darchinyan also spoke about recent comments by Jorge Arce. "I'm the current IBF and IBO champion, and I won my title from the best flyweight - Irene Pacheco when everybody was running from him. Viloria refused to fight me for my title defense. Why do Arce and his people talk to Viloria or anybody else? Because they are afraid of me! It will be impossible to ignore me in future as I will unify all the titles.....Let's make a flyweight tournament. Arce, let's fight after your fight with Rosendo Alvarez."

IMO Brian needs one or two fights before Arce. Arce is just too durable and too furious for him right now.

As for Darchinyan, he better not look past Gabi as Gabi is an excellent boxer and has good combinations. Gabi is a hungty fighter too and wants to prove that he's one of the Philippines' elite fighters.

I agree with Bigsmooth and my ole buddy Janno. Viloria's best fights are still ahead of him. With 19 pro fights that's par for the course. His future is what he should prepare for even as he learns from mistakes of the past (e.g., he is not Ali and should not rope-a-dope).

If a meeting with Arce is fated, it will happen. But I don't think Brian's camp should force the issue on the undercard of Pac-Erik in Sept or at any time before Brian is truly ready. There's good picking where he is and there are those among the ranks of contenders who can help him learn. But to really learn, he has to raise the level of competition even more. After he does, the Arce fight would even be so much better.

It should be Vic Darchinyan who should be shutting his mouth. He better not look past Gabi because the guy is very much capable of giving him a run for his money.

If he survives Gabi then he can talk of Arce or Villoria.
