Comments Thread For: Hopkins, Schaefer Respond to Shumenov Scoring

Bernard Hopkins left with the victory and the unification of two light heavyweight titles. But that doesn’t mean that Hopkins or Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions were happy with the scoring.

The win, which appeared to be clearly in Hopkins’ favor, was a split decision. Judge Gustavo Padilla scored the bout 114-113 for Shumenov, giving him seven of the 12 rounds. Padilla was the only judge to give Shumenov rounds 3, 6 and 8.

I didn't bother to score the fight, but in retrospect, I think B-Hops may of won at least 8 or 9 rounds. It's something about this guy where guys just can't pull the trigger on him. Mayweather is the same way, but he's young compared to Hopkins. Hopkins starts all of his fights in a very old man stance and then later on in the fight, he starts to loosen up and get slick in there. Re-watch the fight and watch how he starts. His posture is so old school that its funny. And not old school like in the 70's or 80's. I'm talking in the 40's and 50's.

Its called Movement, can't hit a moving target. this is where the discipline comes in - the man fought a constant moving, and feinting type of fight, Ring Generalship at its best!

Popkins clearly won the fight. DC scoring has always been an issue. Hard to get quality fights here.

Playing devils advocate here...Popkins didn't do **** the first three rounds. If you go by the book, he shouldn't have been awarded rounds 1,2,3 just for being Bernard Hopkins. I had him winning a clear UD though.

Explain how you have Beibut winning those rounds, when he did much, much less then?

If you 'go by the book' Hopkins couldn't have lost those rounds except the first. He landed more punches, he landed the cleaner punches, he controlled the pace, he controlled the space and made Shumenov do what he wanted and he hardly got touched by anything that Shumenov threw.

That is scoring by the book.

I agree that scorin that for shumenov is terrible. But 116-111 was very fair. It ciukdve been wider but i gave 1, 2 and eithr 9 or 10 cant remembr which to shumenov and 3 and 4 were bhop but relatively clise i thought
