Comments Thread For: Kovalev's Trainer Expects Hopkins To Defeat Shumenov

Sergey Kovalev’s trainer is more than sure the fighter he works with is ready to beat Bernard Hopkins.

John David Jackson is not nearly as confident about Beibut Shumenov being up to the task. Jackson, Hopkins’ former trainer, expects the WBA light heavyweight champion from Kazakhstan to succumb to the 49-year-old Hopkins’ experience and guile when they meet Saturday night in a 175-pound unification fight at Washington’s D.C. Armory (9:30 p.m. ET; Showtime).

Poor Kovalev. He talked all that big boi **** and now he's stuck with HBO while the rest of his division. Which means he'll get one fight after another off TV in Russia for about 3 or 4 sheep dogs. At least he'll have the boxingscene dip**** d1ckridin' him the whole way through:wank:

It's all about boxing fundamentals. That's what made the difference between someone gifted in boxing like Roy Jones and someone who really studied his craft in Bernard Hopkins. Once those gifts go away you have to rely on your knowledge in the ring. You also have to know how to pick your opponents. Bernard knows he can't deal with fighters that have good hand speed; this late in his career. Dawson, Calzaghe, and Jermaine Taylor had this. They don't have to be A level boxers, but their hand speed and pressure is what gave B-Hop trouble. B-Hop is one of my favorite fighters, but I have to call it like I see it. Shumenov has a chance as Jackson is saying, but he has to apply pressure; don't respect his elders on Saturday night.

Hit him in his arms ? Keep doing that and waste shots, get tired and then picked off later on in the fight

JDJs right that Shumenov has next to no chance - he just does't have the skill, the workrate, the frootwork or handspeed and he might as well send you a letter to tell you his punches are on the way.

He is big and strong however and has at least a punchers chance and if he was more aggressive and had a higher workrate the brawlling, bullying tactics Jackson suggests might have a chance of working, but TBH Beibut just ain't good enough.

Shumenov is the very definition of a paper titlist - with his families money (they really are very, very rich with power and influence at the top level of government) suggesting the reason for his somewhat bizarre elevation to super champion despite 18 months of inactivity and no meaningful fights in 4 years.

With regards to Kovalev whilst I'm reluctant to ever pick against Hopkins I believe Kovalev is the current fighter with (by a wide margin) the best chance of beating him. Kovalev can throw a lot of heavy punches and has the high level of activity to give Hopkins problems. Beating Cloud, Murat or even Shumenov does little to tell us how Hopkins will cope with with a genuinely skiller pressure fighter.

            Stevenson could also beat Hopkins.

Why would he fight off HBO when he can draw 1 million plus viewers against no-names like Cedric Agnew?

Stevenson could, but stylistically I think Kovalev has the better chance - I think Kovalevs volume punching and high pressure, high activity style would be more of a problem for Hopkins who's proven more than capable of smothering counterpunchers in the past (although Stevenson is very good at what he does).

This fight is a lot more dangerous than people think. Pascal knocked down Hopkins in their first fight, and Shumenov hits harder than Pascal.

Right, they don't realize Kovalev is a smart biniss man.
