MANILA: The chief of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has reminded boxing icon Manny “Pacman” of his tax liabilities totalling $40 million after he reclaimed the world welterweight crown from unbeaten Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas, Nevada over the weekend.
Kim Jacinto-Henares, the outspoken BIR chief, issued the reminder following a statement of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino calling Pacquiao a “national treasure” for his victory over Bradley.
The reminder caused a stir among netizens with many of them describing Henares a “spoilsport” for dampening the nationwide rejoicing over the victory of Pacquiao, also a member of the House of Representatives for Sarangani province in restive Mindanao.
But Malacanang Palace through Undersecretary Abigail Valte, the deputy presidential spokesman, on Monday immediately came to the defence of Henares, saying the BIR chief did not mean to spoil Pacquiao’s win.
“At this point, I don’t think she (Henares) meant to be a spoiler for his victory,” Valte told a televised press briefing from Malacanang.
“Perhaps, it’s in the spirit of fun,” Valte added, “because we know how we can find humour in every situation and perhaps this is an example of that.”
Valte also pointed out the BIR was already working with Pacquiao on how to settle his reported tax liabilities totalling $40 million in 2008 and 2009 before he flew to the US for his “grudge fight” with Bradley.
On the eve of their bout, Henares expressed the hope that Pacquiao would take back the welterweight crown snatched from him by Bradley in a controversial split decision in Las Vegas in January 2012.
But, at the same time, Henares reminded Pacquiao should make sure he would report his correct earnings from the Bradley fight in his 2014 income tax returns.
Reports were that Pacquiao secured a guaranteed purse of $20 million for his return bout from Bradley. This was aside from his share from the pay-per-view TV as well as his earnings from commercial endorsements of products from the Philippines and the US.
