Comments Thread For: Roach Confident Cotto Will Exploit Martinez's Style

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is not impressed with the fighting style of WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs). The Argentine star will defend his title, on June 7th at New York's Madison Square Garden, against Roach's newest pupil Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs), who will attempt to win a fourth world title in his fourth weight division.

Freddie Roach has always been a pretentious flag waver. Still, I agree that Cotto will do what Cotto always does. He'll give a good accounting of himself. He will have success for as long as it takes for Sergio to start connecting with his heavy shots. Then Cotto will unravel and it'll be bye bye Miguel.

Short of another knee injury or sneaking a swift kick at it during an early rounds it's going to take cotto fighting the fight of his life to win. If Pacquaio stopped him, Martinez is going to rock his world.

If Martinez is 80% of what he is he should be able to stop Cotto inside 9 rounds.

The ignorance is strong with Boxingscene today. Martinez is not some great figher, seriously where do you people come up with this ****? He lost his last fight against a guy who didn't jab, just walked in with his hands up and nothing else. He was dropped in that fight, dropped in the Chavez fight, dropped in every fight prior up to the first Williams fight. His defense is sloppy, he is very easy to hit and he is actually pretty easy to drop.

Cotto will have the speed advantage in this fight, period. You "know it all" type guys can say otherwise but Sergio is fast compared to 180+ pounders, Cotto was keeping up with guys at 140 and 147. He'll cut off the ring on the slower Martinez and Sergio backs straight up into the ropes, not to metion Cotto is a far smarter fight than Sergio. He started younger and had a prestine amateur career. All that being said, it's still a close fight as Sergio isn't a bad fighter and again he is the bigger man and Cotto doesn't not have the chin. But, skills pay the bills and Cotto is a much better all around boxer/fighter than Sergio.

isn't this the same Freddie Roach that said Pacquiao would KO Marquez in 3 rounds?
