VIRGIL HUNTER BREAKS DOWN CANELO VS. LARA: "IT'S GOING TO BE A GOOD FIGHT"
By Ben Thompson | July 10, 2014
"That's going to be a good fight; interesting fight. You know, I heard Canelo say that he would try to use some of Angulo's blueprint for Lara, but Canelo is a boxer; he's not a pressure fighter. I don't see him really applying that type of pressure, cutting the ring off all night long and in Lara's face like that, and being willing to take punches to get there," stated world-class trainer Virgil Hunter, who shared his thoughts on Saturday's intriguing showdown between former jr. middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and WBA jr. middleweight champion Erislandy Lara. Having previously faced both fighters with Alfredo Angulo, Hunter has firsthand knowledge of what each man can expect when they step into the ring on Saturday.
"I think Canelo is probably the best fighter that Lara has faced up to date now in his career. I'll put it this way, if Canelo cannot stop Lara from moving the way he likes to move or where he likes to move, he's going to be in for a tough night. If he can neutralize Lara's movement and take advantage of that, then I think it'll be a tough night for Lara. So to say that and come right to the middle of it, I can see Lara really going ahead in this fight on points, depending on how they score it, and Canelo having to come from behind and really come out of himself to win this fight," Hunter explained during a recent conversation with FightHype.com. "I don't care what anybody says, Canelo has stamina problems and he even showed it against Angulo when he was down to one punch at a time from the 5th round on up. I don't think he can afford to have that letdown with Lara, but at the same time, Canelo is fast, he's quick, he's got a good left hook and Lara has gone down from a left hook before. But I think Lara knowing that he overcame adversity and what he overcame, I think it gives him a big edge in confidence to know that he can overcome things when they get tough. That's a huge edge for a fighter. It's going to be a good fight."
I like All Access and everything. I'm glad Canelo-Lara got a preview show too. It deserved it. That said, 24/7 is just so much better. I wish Schrieber could lend his voice to both networks.
I picked Canelo to win the day the fight was announced and made a bet on him to win. Now that it's only 2 days left, I think Lara is gonna box circles around him.
