Comments Thread For: Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Clive Atwell Eyed For May 24th

Promoter Oswaldo Kuchle of Promociones del Pueblo has revealed that undefeated Clive Atwell (12-0-1, 7KOs) of Guyana would be the challenger for World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight champion Jhonny González (55-8, 47KOs) on May 24th in Acapulco, Mexico. Atwell has knocked out seven of his last eight opponents, who were far below the level of Gonzalez. This will be his first fight outside of Guyana.

I've never seen this Clive Atwell fight, but if he's decent he could very well upset Jhonny.

        I have, 2x...he's a young/inexperienced guy, 12 fights I believe, from Guyana...this is like leading a lamb 2 the slaughter...fights like this can ruin a young guys career...IMO ,doesn't say much 4 his management...

          Mares is scared

Jhonny hit Mares so hard, Mares is going to be super careful who he fights from now on, he is going to be almost as picky as khan. Amir Khan is still the king of excuses, dodging good fighters and trying to sue anyone who he can get $ from. If talking won titles, khan would be the best champ ever.

I guess you can't reject a title shot. Is he any good? Does he seem to have power?

Jhonny Gonzalez is a vulnerable champion. Before the Mares fight, he had looked bad vs Ponce de Leon, and flat out awful vs Osejo (he got dropped and beat up in that fight and was given a gift decision).
There's a reason why people were completely writing him off before the Mares fight.

Well, Gonzalez can't wait for Mares forever so he has to take a stay busy fight right now. I just hope he doesn't lose to this Atwell guy because the value of a rematch with Mares goes way down IMO.

Atwell's never left Guyana, I saw his last bout& the 1 where he beat a guy from Venezuela. I am not impressed...He's fought no1 of note...IMO Jhonny won't fight Mares again...
