Comments Thread For: Frank Warren Crosses Fingers, Backs Maccarinelli Stunner

I’m very tempted to invest in the 9-2 odds that bookmakers are offering on Enzo Maccarinelli becoming Wales’ only ever two weight world champion.

Tonight the 33 year old former WBO cruiserweight king from Swansea meets veteran German Juergen Braehmer for the WBA light-heavyweight title at Rostock on Germany’s Baltic coast. BoxNation televise live.

Victory would establish ‘Big Macc’ as the first Brit to win a second world title by dropping down a weight, since Cornishman Ruby Bob Fitzsimmons in 1903.
It is impossible not to like the amiable Welsh-Italian who I’ve been involved with almost from the onset of his pro career fifteen years ago.

Warren's right about one thing - Bradley Saunders was a top class amateur but his all round game and power hitting are even better suited to the demands of pro boxing, something that can't be said for Team GB Olympic captain Tom Stalker, likewise unbeaten as a pro but going nowhere imo.

All this talk about Maccarinelli having a chance, has exited me a bit more for this fight. I'm looking forward to tonight. I hope for Macca, that he has made weight ok, because he certainly looked horrible judging from the pics from the weigh-in.

His southpaw stance is unlikely to inconvenience a man who sparred hundreds of rounds with compatriot Joe Calzaghe ***8211; the greatest portsider of them all!
I'm surprised that Frank Warren never heard of a guy named Marvin Hagler who was a pretty good MW back in the 80s.
