why did he end up in jail anyway and how many years did he do?
He went in at age 17. He was sentenced to about 17 years, did about 5. For armed robbery. He had a lot of stuff on his record as a teenager so they tried him as an adult.
Fresh out of prison in 1988, "B-Hop***8217;s first professional fight was against a bigger man, Clinton Mitchell, which he lost. Hopkins had been forced to gorge on fast food as his then manager made the match at Light Heavyweight, a weight he was not comfortable with."
"But in my heart, in my heart, I knew that I would get another chance in life to redeem myself from what I used to be into where I am now I can show an example not only for boxing but for people in general. I am the American Dream. I am the American Story."
"In any other country in the world I wouldn't have gotten the second chance." - when asked why he exhibits so much patriotism.

So why tack on the lame excuse regarding the first loss? I mean its still a loss at 175 no matter how you slice it. The dude still went on to have a hof/atg career and he did return to 175 to great results. Why the weight excuses and the excuses in general all the time I don't understand it.
