Marvelous Marvin Hagler does not like MMA

Marvelous Marvin Hagler yes, that's his legal name knows a thing or two about fighting.

The boxing Hall-of-Famer was a world champion from 1980 to 1987. He won 62 of his 67 bouts, with 52 by way of knockout.

So when Hagler weighed in on the mixed martial arts (MMA) fever gripping the globe, reporters in the Shangri-La Hotel room in Kuala Lumpur were all ears.

"That sport right there, I can't see any art inside," said 59-year-old Hagler, who was in Malaysia as a guest of the Laureus World Sports Award.
"If you wanna teach a kid how to fight (in MMA), you can just take him to the bar. That's what it looks like to me."

The American native added, "I can't understand them laying on the floor like that, and the ref don't get them up. It's terrible."

"It's really taking off. It's growing because boxing has been drifting away, so it's brought that (MMA) into the spotlight," he said.

The topic of MMA was first raised when Hagler pointed to a dearth of heavyweights in present-day boxing.
"Everybody's hoping we'll find another heavyweight like Mike Tyson but I don't think we're gonna find that," he lamented.

"Fighters aren't the same (these days)," he concluded.

"They don't sacrifice enough, they're not hungry enough. You gotta have that killer instinct and I see a lot of them, they don't have that."

I love Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and I respect what he says and thinks, but I disagree and enjoy MMA. Most of those guys can't strike, but they aren't just "laying on the floor". A lot of those guys are top level wrestlers and BJJ artist.

So overall I kinda like MMA,not near as much as boxing but still...I'm a fight fan. Boxing,MMA,Kickboxing, etc.

BTW the rematch last Sunday with Dan Henderson and Shogun was a pretty good fight...Both guys can really punch and have granite chins.

    Sounds like an idiot,,,

people dont understand grappling or jiu-jitsu, and dont know the difference between the mount, or full guard or half guard etc...

What he says is the equivalent of someone idiot saying all boxing is "is 2 guys punching each other in the face,, how is punching people in the face a skillset".... Thats exactly the crap that hagler is spewing here..
People that dont know the subject, sound ingnorant as hell when they talk trash

It's like in everything, you have talented individuals and mediocre ones. Just like you have excellent boxers, there are also brawlers without much skill. MMA has the same.

Honestly, I don't see the point or obsession with some journalists always asking boxers or MMA fighters what they think about the other sport.

MMA shouldnt really be compared with boxing. They are two very different sports. Its like comparing soccer to rugby.

Hagler obviously hasnt paid any attention to how incredibly technical cage fighting is. Im not a fan at all, but i appreciate what they do.
It may look like a brawl, but they really know what they are doing.

Agree 1000%. I don't watch boxing for violence. I don't watch it because it's a combat sport. I watch it for the artistry and the exhibition entirely. I've had countless opportunities to get interested in MMA but have never been compelled by the quality or the character of the game. Loved watching Fedor but that was because of the savagery. MMA does nothing for me personally.

He's right. Why do they lie on the floor doing absolutely nothing? Like resting on each other and ****.

                  Super gay.

I don't know anything about wrestling or ju-jitsu so most of what's happening is completely lost on me. The only parts I enjoy are the stand-up striking phases and that's just a poor man's version of boxing or Muay Thai.
