    Kovalev isn't a crude slugger.

Near the end of the first round of the Thompson fight, he throws a right hand, but doesn't fully extend it, and hits Thompson with a left hook instead. They showed it in a replay.

Kovalev Was KO'd with head gear on by Abbos Atoev. Yes it was the ametures, but the ametures tells a lot about a fighter. Look @ Bute and Price they both showed glass chins in the ametures and it showed in the pros once they stepped up. Twice with both, yes Bute should of lost his 1st fight Leandrado however you spell his name. Same thing is going to happen to Wilder once a pure puncher is able to check his chin, heck it doesn't have to be a pure puncher, probably just a solid puncher. My point is if your going to bring up Stevenson getting TKO, than you have to most definitely take in consideration Kovalev getting KO, dropped hard in the ametur. No excuses! Here's the link since posters ask for proof.

Kovalev's chin is questionable too: the Boone fight, the amateur fight posted where he gets dropped hard, the story with Golovkin.
That's why this fight was so intriguing.

I'm not a fan of either guy by the way, and as a famous Swiss crook said recently about that: "I have no horse in this race".
Not heard anything about the Kovalev SD being controversial - the fight was in Boones home-town town at a time when Kovalev was some 9-0 nobody from Russia, and whilst I've seen a Boone interview where he says he feels he should have got the nod against Ward (he mentions the 4th round KD - whereas Kovalev was a KD7) I've not heard him say he shoulda beat Kovalev.

With the Atoev fight it's unclear how badly Kovalev was hurt from the clip shown and whilst it was recorded as a stoppage the rules in the ams over the safety of fighters are far more stringent and he may well have been able to continue in a pro fight.

With regards to the Golovkin spar Kovalev claims that he was forced to take a knee from a bodyshot by GGG - however he had just returned from a holiday in Russia and was just starting camp whereas Golovkin was already in full fighting fettle.

That said, of course, one of the most intriguing thngs about a potential Stevenson - Kovalev matchup is that there is no real doubt that either guy is completely capable of knocking the other out - the question is which would manage it first.

Who are some punchers that Kovalev could face to answer some questions about his chin?

When an unbeaten prospect gets a SD over a journeyman who's supposed to lose, you can question the decision, especially if you've been watching boxing for a while. But the fact that the bout took place in Boone's hometown makes it less likely.

Amateur boxing is indeed very different from the pros. You can get stopped no matter how solid your chin is. If you get hit flush with power punches that snap your head back, the ref will give you a standing eight count and may stop the fight, even if you're not hurt at all.
Kov did get dropped hard though. He may have been on unsteady legs when he rose from the canvas (if he did), and the ref just waved it off.

Abel Sanchez said in interviews that Kovalev was afraid of GGG. I thought Golovkin hurt/dropped him (with headshots) and Kov became gun-shy. I didn't know the details. Thanks for clarifying.

Kovalev's chin is questionable IMO. He might be one of these big punchers who like to dish out punishment but can't take it.

Larry holmes and Mike tyson were both stopped as armatures. Just a thought. Tyson was a kid then but so his prob doesn't matter as much. But holmes starting boxing at 19.
