I think it's more that he's 36 and he knows that he'll only be earning until his next decisive 'L'. He's also been talking about B-Hop since before the Kovalev fight was much of a glimmer in anybody's eye. It makes sense for him to fight B-Hop in Montreal where B-Hop has history, take that sack of money, then to risk Kovalev at some point in the future. Stevenson only really has a handful of years left, and given his history I suspect it will be hard to keep him on the rails for too many years when he has a lot of pro-boxing money in his pockets.

edit: It's not like a 'W' vs B-Hop would hurt his purse on a fight vs a possibly career ending Kovalev. A 'L' to B-Hop could be hand waived with, 'Old man be sneaky!' and not totally derail a Kovalev fight.

              This right here.

Looks to me like HBO has shot themselves in the foot - AGAIN.

They have essentially setup the circumstances where the linear light heavyweight championship could end up in the hands of Hopkins and Showtime, never to return. If that happens, Kovalev will be on the outside looking in and any plans on Ward moving up to 175 will have to be reconsidered.

I have a su****ious feeling that we'll see Golden Boy and/or Al Haymon fighters on HBO airwaves by this time next year...

If I understand correctly, HBO were willing to pay up as long as he agree to fight Kovalev next. He refused, so he doesn't get what he's asking for. The fact that, out of the blue, Stevenson asked for more money seems su****ious as well.

I believe he asked for HBO to match the Showtime offer, which didn't include a Kovalev clause, and which paid him more money than they were offering.

No contracts had been signed yet.

If HBO wanted to add an extra stipulation, they should have paid even more.

Why should Stevenson take a worse deal for the same fight? Would you?
