Comments Thread For: Jhonny Gonzalez Ring Return Set For 5/24 in Acapulco

Jhonny Gonzalez is set to return to the ring on May 24 in Acapulco. An opponent is still being sought, but the reigning featherweight titlist has grown tired of working around other fighters' schedules and is ready to move on with his career, on his terms.

The 32-year old hasn't fought since regaining a portion of the featherweight title with a surprise 1st round knockout of previously unbeaten Abner Mares last August. A rematch was in store, but postponed due to a reported injury. Mares has since been linked to several other possible fights, but remains undecided on his own next move.

Gonzalez, on the other hand, is ready to begin his third championship tour, including his second reign at featherweight.

"We waited around as long as possible for that famous rib to heal," quipped Oswaldo Kuchle of Promociones del Pueblo, Gonzalez' promoter. "It's time to get back in the ring." [Click Here To Read More]

Mares seems like he doesn't want the rematch right now. I wonder if he's wary of getting in the ring with Gonzalez's power again? Or does he have a more lucrative option coming up? Not sure what's going on with him.

All I know is that Mares better impress in his next fight, whenever that is, because I think he's starting to lose a little bit of respect from hardcore boxing fans.
No way Jhonny's bout will b world class down in Guerrero State/big time Drug Country...Mares just finished working for 7 weeks w/renowned Cuban trained Roberto Quesado...most people don't know him, but he makes Roach & all the famous 1's look like crap...still, he won't beat Jhonny if a rematch happens.

That's interesting, nycsmooth. What do you know about Roberto Quesado?

I'm old enough to remember "The Best",
George Gainford, who trained The "Only" Sugar Ray.

Quesado brought much w/him from CubHe's compketely beneath the radar, but xceptional.
