Comments Thread For: Vanes Martirosyan: Starting Over

By Thomas Gerbasi - For most pros with nearly a decade of experience, a set of regional title belts and a world championship fight on their resume, starting over and getting some tough love in the gym isn’t the preferred option, but Vanes Martirosyan is embracing the newest chapter of his career, one that begins this Friday night with an ESPN Friday Night Fights bout against Mario Alberto Lozano.

“When I went to Joe, I had never sparred 15 rounds in my life, and he had me sparring 15 rounds,” said Martirosyan, who is now being coached by Joe Goossen after a long stint with Freddie Roach. “He even started laughing when he asked me how much rope I jumped before I started. I said three rounds. He said ‘I can do three rounds; you should do eight rounds.’ Everything was surprising, everything was different, and you felt like it doesn’t come that easy – you need to work your butt off. And when he speaks, he gets to me really well. My father loves it, I love it, and we’re going to do good things together.” [Click Here To Read More]

I didn't know that he is now with Joe Goosen. I hope this new trainer works out for him, it sounds like Roach was too busy to give him the proper attention.

Great interview. It never ceases to amaze me how unprofessional many "pro" trainers can be. Freddie Roach might be a good trainer, but his inability to spend time with all but his biggest fighters makes him nearly useless to guys like Martirosyan. Another guy that's stretched too thin is Robert Garcia. Donaire basically trained himself for the Rigo fight, and he's one of Robert's biggest clients!

I, myself, couldn't believe Vanes would only do three rounds of rope skipping. Hell, I never competed; but I would do three rounds of skipping, along with three rounds of heavybag and three rounds of speedbag in any given training session. I find it startling that a world-class boxer wouldn't do much more.

I remember Khan and Argenis Mendez (iirc) complaining about the same issue with Roach.

I always thought Vanes had good potential, not sure about junior Middleweight world champ talent, but very close. Hopefully Goosen can get him to pick things up. It's not like he's coming off of a crazy knockout loss, he drew with Lara, and lost a very close decision to Andrade in a fight where he scored a knockdown.
