From *********:
The "Russian Giant" Nicolay Valuev must delay his first title defense scheduled for April 1. At the beginning of February, the WBA heavyweight champion underwent an operation to smooth the inner meniscus in his right knee. The routine procedure, carried out by Dr. Walter Wagner in Bayreuth, Germany, went without problems, however the champion is not able to begin training on February 10 as planned. "I want to be optimally prepared for my first title defense," said Valuev today in Berlin. "And for that I must be 100%. I simply want to give my body the necessary rest, then in a couple of weeks I'll again be ready to go." Valuev's first defense is now planned for May 27. Promoter Wilfreid Sauerland stated, "If a boxer doesn't feel 100%, it makes no sense to pressure him. If Nicolay still needs some weeks before he can enter [the ring] again, we'll naturally give him those."
