Boxing needs more gys like Lara, reason is : READ ARTICLE

This is an article I just read on another site. Normally I cant stand this writer but he finally wrote an article that makes sense. We have far too many fighters nowadays who don't fight the best in each division. Back in the 20's-70's even though boxing was always suspect with regard to Mob ties. The best always fought eachother. Nowadays we have people out to only make $ and im def not hating on them for that but for cryin out loud at least give the fans what they want and fight the best once every few fights or something. Only a handful of people do that nowadays, one of my personal fav fighters Miguel Cotto takes on all challengers even when he knows its an uphill battle and Erislandy Lara is the same kind of fighter. Read the article written below and tell me what you think, if you agree or disagree. ( Link for article is at the bottom, I copied and pasted to make it easier)

The World Boxing Association finally wised up in elevating Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) to the WBA 154 lb champion after his back to back big wins over Alfredo Angulo and Austin Trout. The way that Lara defeated Trout, a fighter that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez failed to prove that he was better then, it showed pretty clearly that Lara is arguably the 2nd best fighter in the 154 lb division behind Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Even Floyd Sr. said that he thinks Lara would beat Canelo if that fight were ever to be made. With the WBA title in his possession, Lara now wants Gennady Golovkin, Canelo or Mayweather. Whichever of these fighters want to face him, Lara is ready to fight them.

“I would like to challenge the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather, Gennady Golovkin and any other top fighter that feels they are the best. Boxing should be about fighting the best.”

Lara needs to realize that the sport of boxing has changed dramatically since the time that greats like Sugar Ray Robinson fought. It’s no longer about the best fighting the best. It’s now more like the best carefully picking beatable fighters that they feel they can defeat. You do see good fighters taking on the best when it’s a case where they still come out ahead even in losing the fight due to the big payday that they get.

Look at Canelo facing Mayweather as an example of that. Canelo got a big payday against Mayweather even in losing, so it was still a victory for Canelo due to the payday he got. But it’s safe to say you won’t be seeing Canelo agree to fight Lara or a tough fighter like Golovkin.

Lara is going to have to create his own path for his future and not count on the likes of Canelo, Mayweather or Golovkin fighting him, because that’s probably not going to happen in this lifetime. Lara is too good and those guys don’t want to lose, so a fight against them is not going to happen.

dude, no offense but you have a distorted view of history to a degree. Canelo is 23. For example, SRL didn't fiught Duran until he was 24 and Hearns until he was 25. Chavez was 23 and 44 -0 before he fought for the title. If Canelo fights Lara this year or next year there is nothing wrong.

Not just you but a lot of posters should go back and really look at fighters careers. They are not that different from current fighters.

Guys like Lara pose problems to a lot of fans favorite fighters. That's why they won't ask for them to fight a guy like Lara. I don't think Lara would go 3-0 against a Floyd, Canelo & GGG run, but it'd be nice to see these fights go down in the near future.

I dont think there are any fighters in Lara's position who avoid fights. He cant afford to. Hopefully if he does get to the top he carries on taking the best fights out there, thats seperates the greats from the rest imo. That and winning

Oh my, not another Laratard thread. Canelo will whoop that ass. I would love if Ishe Smith whooped him, now that would be something.

Very poor and biased article, it's basically senselessly bashing Canelo and championing Lara.

              1) It gives Lara credit for wanting to fight Mayweather and Canelo. Never mind the fact that there are thousands of other boxers who would take a fight with either in a heartbeat...

              2) Then it goes on to deny Canelo credit for taking on Mayweather, because he only did it for the money. But Lara wants to fight Floyd and Canelo for high minded reasons, right?

              3) That bit about Lara needing to understand it's no longer about the best fighting the best made me cringe. I mean, how childish and demagogic can you get?

              4) It makes unfair assumptions about Canelo, saying he will never fight someone like GGG. Remeber what people were saying before the Trout fight?

              5) It says Lara is "clearly" the #1 jr. middleweight other than Floyd, because he beat Trout and Angulo. CANELO BEAT THOSE GUYS, TOO! Yes, Lara's win over Trout was more impressive, but on the other hand, Canelo didn't get dropped twice and taken to the brink by Angulo. And he doesn't have sloppy draws with Molina and Vanes.

Overall, poor, poor stuff. All it proves is that anything passes for journalism these days.

Thats the truth. Alot of people think in the old days the best were always fighting each other when they were lots of fights against nobodies between the better fights. There were also a larger quantity of high level fighters back then.

I'll go ahead and say what the TS really wants to say without the sugar; it sucks that Lara is the best in his division but because of politics we have to watch Nelo, who would give Lara his biggest purse avoid him..Since I'm a fan of Maidana I'm happy for him and proud for earning the big Floyd payday even though i know he don't belong in there with Floyd. Likewise with Lara, I am a big fan of his and I want to see him getting that exposure and big paycheck just like the undeserving Nelo does. He's fought a thousand eliminators and it seems GBP just want him to lose so they can write him off as unworthy even though he's champ..

Nelo and Chavez are two heads on the same coin; both spoonfed Mexicans who aren't nearly as good as those on top of their class, and don't even fight at their true class anyways but at least Chavez, like Danny Garcia has faced his boogyman. And yes Nelo is young but so what at this point!! He's already gotten 40 something fights, million dollare purses, exposure for his alleged action style so it's time to step up to...the CHAMP in your division even if he is just begging for money..

Good point. Let's see if Landy keeps that attitude if he becomes the top dog. lol
