  • Comments Thread For: Bernard Hopkins: I'm Looking Through Beibut Shumenov

Bernard Hopkins has been the true champion at light heavyweight before.

He held that distinction in 2011 after beating Jean Pascal, who had topped Chad Dawson the year before when the lineage was vacant and Dawson and Pascal were considered the top two fighters in the division.

And that’s not even including the RING championship Hopkins won from Antonio Tarver in 2006 and lost to Joe Calzaghe in 2008, an era in which Zsolt Erdei had the strange distinction of being the lineal champion without being considered the consensus man to beat in his division. Shumenov is pretty big and pretty strong, and TBH not terrible - but he ain't much good either. I'll be surprised if even Ol' Granpa Hopkins can't hustle his way to a points win (which is of course remarkable in itself).

Hell...I'm all for a unifier. That'd be fantastic - so long as the Stevenson - Kovalev fight comes off first. If Stevenson squirms his way outta fighting Kovalev by chasing Hopkins when everyone knows which is the more important fight, it leaves any proclamation of the 'best' at LHW wanting IMO.

Hopkins needs to be careful. He's shown in recent years how vulnerable he is. Veteran tricks and tactics can only take you so far. I want him to succeed. I just hope he treads lightly.

          Legendary talk.

Bernard is the one (besides Ward) who's got right tools and able to unify all the belts at 175 to become the first light heavy weight undisputed champion in history with 5 major belts like he did it at middleweight division.

And i think he'll definitely do it by the end of the year.

Moreover, hope fight with Ward will never happen.

Brothers shouldn't fight each other. Too many lowskilled fakes around calling themselves a boxers who haven't paid dues and gotta be exposed.

I'm for the unifier...but he isn't that good. Dude has like zero head/foot movement and his most impressive win is a robbery

I wonder if Steve Smoger will work the fight and punch Shumenov like he did Murat?

Shumenov will be fighting two men in there.

Hopkins hasn't had a meaningful bout in 3 years..a true de la Hoya cherry picker...never mentions Ward, Stevenson...but he'd go 2 '60 4 FM...great...fortunate he never fought in the area of Monzon, Bob Foster or Mike Spinks...
