Are boxers left with 10% of their purse?

Once they've payed everyone? Including the tax to the government?

no. my guess would be somewhere in the ballpark of 40-60%

certainly not 10, unless they have the worst deal ever.

it depends on the fighter. 10% is very low, and most fighters surely make more than that.

the muhammad ali act stipulates that a manager can't take more than 33% [and do some other stuff, but i won't digress.] a trainer generally makes 10%. taxes from state and fed are calculated after the expense of paying your manager, trainer, and any other training expenses. fighters bring in revenue from purses, but they'll also bring in some from sponsorships, etc.

Manager percentage and training costs must come in around 30-35% combined leaving 65-70% which is then taxed. I think the big earners end up with just under 50% of their purse provided they don't have a lot of hangers on and extended family with their noses in the trough.

I thought King charged 50%? Or was the Ali act brought in specifically to countermand him in particular?

Manager, promoter, cornermen, taxes (top federal bracket is 39.6%, and any state taxes. I think you pay state taxes for the state you fight AND live in...so potential for paying two combined state taxes)

              So let's say 10,000,000

Manager, promoter, cornermen, etc. would take around 35%? My best guess.

              leaving you with 6,500,000

If you fight and live in Vegas, no state tax...you walk away with about 4,000,000

So going by that model and then adding state tax for certain (most) fighters, my best guess is a fighter sees a total of 32-35% of the purse in their pocket.

But it's different for everyone. Say if you're involved in a purse bid. A winning promoter keeps 20% of the purse offer that they submit. with 75%-80% going to the champ depending on whether he is fighting in his home country or not.

              So purse bid of $1,000,000

              800k to fighters

600k to champ fighter. Then apply the people you pay off from before, minus the promoter since they got their cut from purse bid.

This is what I understand from the many many threads on this topic from the past. It's not a clear % but I'd say it was at 1/3 of the purse on average.

I think that would be accurate. It's never even near so low as 10. It would hardly be worth it for that.
