Comments Thread For: Lederman Hopes HBO Someday Features Roman Gonzalez

HBO’s ringside scorer Harold Lederman is a big fan of power-punching former 105- and 108-pound titleholder Roman Gonzalez, and he’s hoping that his employer will begin to spotlight the fighter in his campaign in the flyweight division.

This makes me forgive a bit some of his terrible scorecards. He is totally right about Chocolatito.

Is it really that much harder to get viewers to watch flyweights than 118 or 122lbers?

I don't know why because a great fight is a great fight and great fighters are great fighters, are they 105 or 220 pounds.

It's pretty much a crime against the boxing community that El Chocolatito isn't getting exposure on the networks. I watch his fights all the time on youtube, and he's every bit as exiting as everyone else out there. I've actually been more eager to find out his next opponent on 4/6, as opposed to finding out who Mayweather is fighting.

I think the networks are about 25yrs behind in their way of thinking. They're still of the belief that fans would rather watch a crappy heavyweight match-up than a great one in the flyweight division. What they don't realize is there's probably only 300k-400k hardcore fight fans in this country. And the casual fanbase is non-existant. So the fans that are actually tuning in to a card on regular HBO or Showtime are hardcore fans that would rather watch a great flyweight match-up over a lotta the **** they put out. I've been saying for years that even if they don't wanna feature them on the championship cards. Featuring the fly and bantamweight divisions on BAD and Shobox. And even ESPN would drastically improve the qualties of those series.

Is it that hard for Roman to forge a relationship with a US promoter and fight on the undercard/co-main event?

Any exposure is better than none really.
