There had been plenty of discussion and debate in recent weeks about who Floyd Mayweather should face in his next fight, and why. Mayweather ended up choosing Marcos Maidana as his May 3 opponent pay-per-view opponent instead of picking Amir Khan, and longtime boxing commentator Larry Merchant says that was a good pick.

“I think it was the smart thing to do and the right thing to do in that Khan had been so idle and that there was a lot of cynicism about the fight,” Merchant told BoxingScene.com on Feb. 28.

Had Floyd chosen Khan to fight instead he would've been criticized for taking on an inactive, soft-chinned opponent.

I dont think Khan is a very intelligent individual and he dreams and over estimates his abilities too much. He really needs to put in some work for him to get the Mayweather fight. He hasnt looked really good of late and he needs to redeem himself first before opening his tin shouting the name Mayweather. He needs to fight solid fighters and go through them well for him to earn this shot.

Technically it's the "right" fight with respect to his poll - however it's not the best competitive fight. That would've been something like Lara or Martinez at 154.

Maidana is at this point more deserving given the "wow" factor (i.e., Broner win)
