Comments Thread For: Arum: Chavez Needs Real Trainer, Game Plan in Future

Though Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fought much better for his second bout with Bryan Vera than he did for the first, there are still significant changes that need to be made in his training camp, according to promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, who passed along criticism he said came from Chavez’s father, the Hall of Fame fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.

JCCJr did show up in shape and looked A LOT better than his last outing, but I agree with Sr. and Bob that he needs a trainer who can teach him to think better in the ring. He's talented and strong, but his ring IQ is pretty poor. I think he beats Martinez in a rematch and I'd love to see him against Ward, but he probably loses that fight pretty bad unless he learns to think a bit better in there. Then again, he may just be on the dumb side. Can't tell if its all the pot or what, but he always comes across as such a ******-ass in interviews.

Was Chavez not supposed to be pairing with Robert Garcia for his fight last night? I could have sworn I read something about that....

        Well

Chavez really wants to fight Martinez but HBO, Arum are all pushing for him to fight Golovkin. Kellerman when he was interviewing Chavez he only asked about a fight with Golovkin but before that Chavez said he wanted to go back down to 160 to fight Martinez. Kellerman just brushed it off.

Yah I kinda feel bad for him. He's gung-ho enough to take on any challenge but GGG may be too tall an order for him. He might get seriously hurt against GGG if he fights with the hit and get hit style we're now accustomed to seeing from him.

I think the main issue with chavez is his lack of real inside work it like if he isn't properly in a perfect position he won't throw he had several 10-20 second intervals where he didn't throw

Outside of Nacho B. or maybe Floyd Snr I don't see a world class trainer that could give Jr his full time attention. Garcia has too many fighters now imo, Roach got canned. Hunter has too many fighters. He doesn't want his dad to train him. Jr seems to make his own adjustments on the fly and abandon the gameplan anyway and if I'm not mistaken Jr did say he had a gameplan for Vera after the fight.

only one i see making an impact on chavez, jr. is garcia. nacho is a bit old and grouchy, mayweather, sr. can't really communicate but garcia i think can force the best out of junior.
