I think it is well-established that Amir Khan has had a raw deal from Floyd Mayweather. However, I think that the fight with Mayweather is something akin to a "red herring", and the effects of Khan's disappointment have been overplayed. I believe, to continue with the fish metaphor, that Khan has bigger fish to fry, and is looking at Mayweather as a mere stepping stone in the context of his career. Khan's ultimate goal, and this is well-documented within his current fighting stable, is to fight Gennady Golovkin sometime down the line. There is tension between Amir Khan and Andre Ward due to Khan's burgeoning relationship with Hunter, and that tension came to the public fore recently when Ward denied that he sparred with Khan. Whether they sparred or not, is not clear, but an insider of Ward's has admitted that the two have "issues" with one another.
Ward has already relayed his concerns regarding a prospective fight with Golovkin to Hunter, essentially conceding that he wants no part of him. In the midst of this confessional, Khan emerged and told Hunter that he was ready to face Golovkin within the next 18 months. Ward, apparently, was knocked off balance by this revelation, and moodily stalked off without saying a word. This left Hunter with a dilemma as to who his "star man" is, and both he and Khan have been putting together a "blueprint" for Khan's next three "galactico" showdowns. Khan will have an intermediate fight, likely with Adrien Broner, before he embarks on a showdown with Mayweather, Manny Pacquaio and a career-defining fight with Golovkin. Khan is confident that Mayweather is ripe for the taking, and is convinced that, at best, it is a five-round fight. The issue with Pacquaio is more complicated, with Khan having to put professionalism before friendship. The Golovkin fight is what will shape Khan's legacy, however, and he knows success here will likely elevate him above Mayweather and Pacquaio in the all-time great list.
