  • Comments Thread For: Angel Garcia: Broner Made Mistake By Skipping 140

Angel Garcia, trainer for WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, says Adrien Broner (27-1, 22KOs) made a big mistake by skipping 140-pounds, when he made a decision to jump up in weight from 135 to 147.

Broner won titles at super featherweight and lightweight, and then jumped to the welterweight division last June, when he captured the WBA title with a tough split decision win over Paulie Malignaggi.

But before all these divisions if a lightweight wanted to move up to WW he would.
The problem here is that Broner just wasn't as good as we thought he was.

It's obvious - Broner chose Pauli because he was the weakest champ in 3 divisions and he barely beat him. He would have never made it to 147 if he had stopped at 140.

pretty much! all the hype got to him as many others thought he would beat maidana and with east I KNEW it wouldn't go well even had he won and that's why I made some nice cash that night lol

I'll admit, I bought into the Broner hype. Even though I saw the flaws in the Malinaggi fight, I simply thought because Malinaggi couldn't hurt him, Broner chose to fight in that manner. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. But yeah looking back Broner just wasn't as good as advertised.

too many fighters are obsessed with becoming multiple weight champs. clean out or pretty much clean our your division first, then move up (or down). there's plenty of names at 140 broner could've fought, but he just wants to emulate floyd in every way, but what he doesn't realize is that floyd went up in weight over the space of 15+ years.

his hype would have ended sooner if he DIDN'T skip 140. i would have picked any of the top guys there at the time to beat broner.

I didn't really rate Broner but I couldn't see Maidana beating him doe, Angel is right and this was the exact same thing that Mayweather said to Broner, the move up has to be done gradually.

He's lucky because the two pit bulls (Garcia and Provodnikov - and yes I know he's Top Rank so piss off) are at 140.

Can't throw a poodle in with the pitbulls.

Well Broner didn't exactly leap to 147 with the Maidana fight, it was the Malignaggi fight, which I personally scored a Draw. After that fight, he should have gone down to 140. His mistake was staying at 147. Despite Maidana being carefully chosen by Broner's team, it was the fan polls who also picked Maidana, Broner and his team just happily agreed to it thinking it would be easy, and I admit I thought the same.

I don't see anything at 140. First of all he has this BFF stuff going on with Garcia and Peterson, two of the 4 best fighters he could fight at 140, the other two being Khan and Matthysse. Khan wants to fight at 147 because he supposedly would feel stronger, and Matthysse wants to fight in April and I don't know if Broner would fight a fighter as powerful as Matthysse just one month and a half months away.

So GBP and Broner/Khan will have to agree on some catchweight which I honestly don't see it as a big deal. 143-144 sounds good and I don't see either camp complaining about a CW like that.
